It is widely accepted that container terminals can significantly boost productivity by using optimization software for automated decision-making. However, it’s no secret that the implementation of these systems bears challenges
that need to be addressed carefully. Regardless of the software solution you use, common pitfalls generally fall into three different groups:

  1. Technical challenges such as missing or wrong data, insufficient testing, inaccurate representation of the business complexity in the optimization software, or poor optimization algorithms.
  2. Human challenges such as lack of sufficient training, lack of operational process discipline, or too many manual overrides of decisions made by theoptimization software, and
  3. Operational changes such as keeping the solution up to date with the inevitable changes in the terminal, such as serving a new liner string, incorporating new equipment or accommodating new work rules.
