Implementing Optimization Software
It is widely accepted that container terminals can significantly boost productivity by using optimization software for automated decision-making. However, it’s no secret that the implementation of these systems bears challenges
that need to be addressed carefully. Regardless of the software solution you use, common pitfalls generally fall into three different groups:
- Technical challenges such as missing or wrong data, insufficient testing, inaccurate representation of the business complexity in the optimization software, or poor optimization algorithms.
- Human challenges such as lack of sufficient training, lack of operational process discipline, or too many manual overrides of decisions made by theoptimization software, and
- Operational changes such as keeping the solution up to date with the inevitable changes in the terminal, such as serving a new liner string, incorporating new equipment or accommodating new work rules.
